Guide to the Board of Directors Election at the Health District

Here at the Health District of Northern Larimer County, we take to heart our responsibility to ensure a free and fair election for our district voters.

This means adhering to established electoral guidelines. It also means giving you transparent communication and equitable access to voting information.  We’re a special tax district under the State of Colorado funded by property tax dollars – meaning we’re funded by you.

The Health District is governed by an elected five-member Board of Directors, with three seats up for election on Tuesday, May 6, 2025.

Your vote matters! Make it count.

Read on for answers to some frequently asked questions.

I’ve lived in northern Larimer County for a while and have never heard of this election before. Why is that?

While the Health District has made efforts to promote this election in the past, we're excited to be expanding our outreach strategy. We're dedicating additional resources toward ensuring all eligible voters in northern Larimer County have access to unbiased information and can easily exercise their voting rights.

What’s different about this year’s election?

We’re committed to running our elections in a professional, standardized way to protect accuracy and security.

  • We’ve enlisted a professional Designated Election Official (DEO) to run the election in alignment with legal requirements, industry standards, and best practices.
  • Votes will be counted by certified counting machines under the supervision of trained, bipartisan election judges overseen by the DEO.
  • We’ve added additional polling places and extended hours for ballot drop-off to increase access to voting. Polling places and ballot drop-off info is available at healthdistrict.org/election.

How can I vote?

This is a polling place election, which means you can either vote in person on May 6 or request an absentee ballot to vote by mail. You can request an absentee ballot on our website through April 29. We will process your absentee ballot application within 72 hours. When you receive your ballot is dependent on mail delivery times, which are typically 3 - 5 days. Between now and May 5, ballots can be mailed back or dropped off at the Health District at 120 Bristlecone Drive in Fort Collins. On May 6, ballot dropoff boxes will also be located at each polling place.

How do I learn about the candidates?

The candidates are listed on the sample ballot posted on our website. Names were drawn randomly at the candidate orientation to determine the order they appear. As with most elections, candidates will share their own candidacy and messaging with voters. To avoid any unintended implied endorsement, the Health District will not be publicizing candidate biographical information on our website.

How do I know if I live in the district?

You can check your address on the Health District website at healthdistrict.org/resources/district-boundaries.

Why is this election happening now?

Due to state law for this type of local government (a special district), our election happens separately from regular November elections.  The Health District holds its elections in May of odd-numbered years (e.g., 2023, 2025, 2027), with directors serving four-year terms.

I’m registered to vote in Colorado and I live in district boundaries. Do I have to register separately to vote in this election?

If you’re registered to vote in Colorado and live within district boundaries, you’re automatically eligible to vote in Health District elections.

I’m a property owner in the district but don’t live there. Am I eligible to vote in this election?

Registered Colorado voters who own property in the district, but whose permanent residence is not in the district, are still eligible to vote in Health District elections.

Where can I find the most reliable information about this election?

The Health District website contains objective, updated information that reflects election best practices and legal requirements.

Why should I vote in this election?

We provide mental health care, dental care, access to insurance coverage, community engagement, and support of other key health care resources in our community.
